“One of the finest burial grounds in England”
About the Cemetery
Opening Hours: Please note Gods Acre Cemetery is open all.
As of 2020, as the burial authority, Corfe Castle Parish Council took over the administration of the God’s Acre Cemetery from the Trustee’s of God’s Acre.
The burial ground has been described as “one of the finest in England” nestling as it does under one off Britain’s most iconic castles. The panoramic view from the ground to the Castle is stunning and visitors are uplifted by its setting. The village has prided itself on how well kept the grounds are and the Parish Council is determined that this should continue.
The grounds were donated for village residents but God’s Acre welcomes those with a link to the parish or the Purbeck area. The grounds are next to the West Street car park and are easy to visit. For those wishing to have a service and then burial here there are several venues for a family gathering including a Village Hall with three reception rooms. The grounds have ample space for future burials and cremation plots. The Parish is considering the option of “natural burials” so please enquire about this.
The burial ground is open to all faiths and those with none. Most of the land is consecrated but is open to all. Consecration gives special protection against exhumation.
On the recently reviewed fees list we have widened the definition of ‘associated’ to those who lived in Purbeck as defined in the old Purbeck District Council area including Wareham, Wool, Lulworth, Swanage and Studland.
